National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Introduces Immersive Restaurant Industry Learning Program for High School Students

The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) has launched a unique initiative, JumpStart, aimed at providing high school students with an immersive experience in the restaurant and food service industry. The initiative forms part of NRAEF’s broader mission to empower future industry leaders.

The inaugural JumpStart program will see students from the W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center in Lafayette, Louisiana, travel to Chicago for the National Restaurant Association Show. This initiative, envisioned by former NRA Chair Scott Redler, is designed to supplement the ProStart classroom experience with real-world industry interactions.

The JumpStart program, created in the fall of 2024, offers a close-up look at industry trends and personnel, demonstrating the wide range of opportunities in the sector that currently employs over 15.7 million Americans.

The program’s first participants were chosen through a selection process that involved explaining how the JumpStart experience would benefit their future restaurant career goals and how the initiative would enhance their ProStart classroom experience.

Highlights of the JumpStart experience include industry immersion, expert interactions, and comprehensive coverage. The students will visit the National Restaurant Association Show, meet with industry experts, including Chef Carla Hall, and participate in other activities that will help them start their culinary career journey. The grant covers all essential costs, including travel, accommodation, and participation fees.

The ProStart program, NRAEF’s nationwide career and technical education program, has provided more than 1 million high school students with career-ready culinary and restaurant management skills. The program currently reaches 222,000 students at 2,200 schools, offers restaurant-specific certifications and competencies, over 400 hours of practical work experience, and access to restaurant and hospitality apprenticeship and scholarship opportunities.

The JumpStart initiative is another step by the NRAEF to invest in the future of the restaurant and food service industry. It prepares students to join a professional kitchen or advance to higher education.
